Embodied Elements
Sustainability in the built environment is often buried under layers of technical jargon, complex metrics, and ever-shifting standards. Embodied Elements was created to strip away that complexity and provide a high-utility, plain-language reference for the modern building professional.

Why This Was Built
This project originated as a personal knowledge management system to facilitate a career transition into sustainable design, operations, and certifications. Despite extensive experience in software technology and business analysis, navigating topics like net-zero operations, embodied carbon, and decarbonization strategy revealed a critical insight. The primary barrier to sustainable action is often linguistic rather than technical.
I built this tool to solve three primary challenges:
- A Personal Learning Engine: To serve as a rigorous framework for simplifying credentials like LEED, WELL, and Fitwel while deepening my expertise in building science.
- A Bridge for the Industry: To translate complex concepts into the “business logic” that clients and stakeholders actually care about.
- An Operational Roadmap: To provide a clear point of reference for professionals and business users navigating the “alphabet soup” of global certifications.
The Value of This Resource
Embodied Elements is more than a dictionary; it is a Decision Support Tool designed for:
- Professionals in Transition: For those moving into the built environment, this library provides a fast-track to understanding essential terminology and global standards.
- Business Users & Clients: It provides the “simple explanation” needed to justify sustainable investments, moving the conversation from abstract “green” goals to tangible metrics like operational efficiency and asset performance.
- Strategic Navigation: By breaking down the value proposition of various certifications, from LEED O+M and TRUE to BREEAM and DGNB, it helps users select the right framework for their specific project goals.
My Philosophy: Minimalist & Direct
Guided by a minimalist aesthetic and a commitment to radical clarity, this library focuses on the essential. I believe that when you simplify the language of sustainability, you accelerate the adoption of high-performance building practices.
Whether you are here to learn the difference between pEUI and baseline metrics, or you need to decide which certification path fits your building’s lifecycle, Embodied Elements is designed to give you the answer quickly and get you back to the work of building a better world.
